
BE THE CHANGE BLOCK THREE: SESSION ONE - MASK WITH JAMES GREAVES
The next block of Be the Change starts next Thursday July 3rd. The focus for this ten-week block is 'Approaches to Acting' and offers a range of taster sessions including: Stanisvlaski, Meisner, Mask work, Puppetry, Stella Adler, Uta Hagen, Brecht & Chekov, led by leading industry professionals.
We're delighted to have James Greaves leading a workshop on MASK work for the first session next Thursday. James is a seasoned practitioner and has worked for many years with the fabulous UK's leading mask theatre company Trestle Theatre Co
He studied acting and theatre at Middlesex University gaining an equivalent first class honours degree in theatre. In 1987 he co-founded Trading Faces Theatre Company, specialising in physical theatre and mask work. Their first piece, ‘The Big Boggledy Creature Show’ featured at The RNT Children’s Theatre Festival.
From 1989 he worked extensively with Trestle Theatre Company, taking mask performance all over the world, from Tashkent to Sydney and Tokyo to Taunton. Trestle credits include 'Top Storey', ‘Hanging Around’, 'State of Bewilderment', 'Blood and Roses' and 'Adventures of the Stoneheads'.
Returning occasionally to Trading Faces, he toured/devised ‘Creaking Shadows’, ‘The Little Prince’ and ‘Alice’. He joined Vamos in 2013, creating, devising and touring ‘Finding Joy’, ‘Nursing Lives’, ‘A Brave Face’, ‘Dead Good’ and ‘Boy on the Roof’. He created social media content for Vamos during Covid, devising one visual gag a day for thirty five days, which led to the BBC commission, ‘How Hard is Waving’ for BBC iPlayer.
James has taught mask and theatre workshops throughout the UK and around the World for Trestle, Strangeface, Vamos, Ophaboom, and Scarlet Theatre companies, amongst others. As an actor out of masks, his TV credits include 'Taboo', 'The Enfield Poltergeist' and 'Supacell'. He will be partnering up with Toby Wilsher of Trestle again soon on an exciting new project.
BE THE CHANGE is open to new participants so come and join us if;
- you're looking to support your mental health through creativity,
- you’re an adult in recovery looking to sustain your recovery through engagement with arts
- you’re currently homeless or vulnerably housed looking for support, community & resistance through creativity
Workshops run for two hours every Thursday evening @unionchapeluk Islington from 6.30 - 8.30 pm from July 3rd.
